This conference will focus on a theme inspired by the later work of Reinhart Koselleck in the flourishing area of iconology. As illustrated by two recent works, Der politische Totenkult. Kriegerdenkmäler in der Moderne (1994) and Zur politischen Ikonologie des gewaltsamen Todes (1998), Koselleck increasingly focused his attention beginning in the 1990s on images and representations, as well as on commemorative symbols, above all relating to war monuments. Since 2009, the Bildarchiv in Marburg has housed Koselleck’s photographic and visual archive and a first conference on the topic of political iconology was organized in conjunction with this archive in 2010 by Hubert Locher et Adriana Markantonatos, resulting in the publication Reinhart Koselleck und die politische Ikonologie (2013). The exhibit “Reinhart Koselleck und das Bild” was subsequently organized in Bielefeld in 2018, thanks to the initiative of Bettina Brandt and of Britta Hochkirchen. It contributed to the growing interest in Koselleck’s photographic work and in his reflections on the image. In drawing on these first efforts, our conference aims to focus on the iconographic and iconological dimension of his œuvre as a means of extending and deepening investigation of its implications. By taking Koselleck’s perspective as our starting point, the focus on iconology intends to bring new approaches to this topic to the fore while broadening historical investigation to encompass the extralinguistic domains of aesthetics, art history and the visual arts, and topics drawn from political iconology and political commemoration. In delving into interpretation of the symbolic content of images, iconological methods consider art to be an essential field of production and communication of meaning. In a contemporary context saturated by the omnipresence of images, we hope that this work on and from the perspective of Reinhart Koselleck will open the way to a more comprehensive grasp of the implications of current epistemological and methodological approaches to images and symbols.
